NEW SOUTH WALES' 17TH OLDEST GOLF CLUB
According to The Story of Golf in New South Wales by David Innes, the Hunter's Hill Golf Club was formed on 5 June 1900 and is believed to be the 17th golf club formed in New South Wales. Owing its origin to E F Broad, the first office bearers were a veritable who's who of business and society of New South Wales and Australia.
Establishment
-
Formed on June 5, 1900, recognized as the 17th golf club in New South Wales.
-
Founded by E. F. Broad, with initial office bearers comprising prominent business and societal figures.
-
Operated on a 9-hole course within the grounds of the Gladesville Lunatic Asylum Hospital, offering scenic views of the Parramatta River and Sydney Harbour.
-
Utilized two hospital buildings as its clubhouse and secured a liquor license in 1906.
-
Membership was exclusive, limited to 35 male members and 21 associate members, restricted to residents of Hunters Hill, Woolwich, and Gladesville.
-
Initially adopted the motto "Keep Your Eye on the Ball," which was subsequently changed to "Keep Your Eye on the Rules" to emphasize strict adherence to regulations.
Hibernation
-
The Club ceased operations in September 1932 due to the Hospital's need for land expansion.
-
Negotiations led to Pymble Golf Club assuming the membership and liquor license.
-
To facilitate the liquor license transfer, Hunters Hill Golf Club temporarily relocated its registered address to St Ives and then changed its name to Pymble Golf Club Limited.
-
These formalities were completed in October 1932, marking the end of the original Hunters Hill Golf Club.
A New Beginning
-
In early 2017, some residents of Hunters Hill and Woolwich initiated discussions to re-establish the club.
-
This led to the creation of "The Hunters Hill Masters," with the inaugural tournament held on July 28, 2017, at St Michael's Golf Course in Little Bay, Sydney.
-
Due to the tournament's success and increasing interest, the decision was made to formally re-establish The Hunters Hill Golf Club.
-
The primary objective of the re-established club is to unite, promote, and support a common interest in golf within Hunters Hill and Woolwich.
-
In recent years events have been hosted at St Michael's, Stonecutters Ridge, New South Wales and Concord.
